Word Made Flesh

Yesterday at our service in Victory Fort, Pastor Paolo Punzalan had a powerful message with very simple outline that communicated a very profound truth for any who would ponder and understand it.

Three simple words.

God. With. Us.

This is one of my favorite themes of the Christmas season. More than the gifts, the celebrations, and the FOOD(!), Christmas is a time to celebrate the fact that our God who made and sustains everything chose to enter our human situation and be with us.

This is captured in Matthew 1:22-23:

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”–which means, “God with us.”

The angel, in giving this statement, refers to the then hundreds of years old prophecy of Isaiah. And he was saying, “That prophecy that was stated before is now becoming a reality.” Jesus being born was the fulfillment of hundreds of years of anticipation.

It’s a sign that God doesn’t not forget the promises He’s made. It’s a sign that God doesn’t forget His people. It’s a sign that all people who wait patiently for God will see that it was all worth it.

The Christmas carol O Come All Ye Faithful has this beautiful line in the third verse:

Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing

Whenever I hear that it reminds me that Jesus’ birth was the time when hundreds of God’s promises saw finally had a physical manifestation.

Many people say words that remain just words. We make false promises, half truths, and vague commitments. We lie. We forget. Whether willfully or unintentionally, we mislead people who hear us.

But God’s Words and God’s promises will all be fulfilled in time. Nothing He has promised will remain as words forever.

What words from God are you holding on to today? Believing for someone to be healed? Looking for the restoration of your reputation? Are you waiting for financial provision or breakthrough? Whatever it is, let this holiday season remind you that Christmas was a time when God’s ultimate promise was fulfilled, so yours is on it’s way as well.
